When you apply eyelash extensions, you don't just want to achieve long, voluminous lashes; you aim to create a look that transforms the eyes and produces a stunning effect. Anime spike lashes, or manga lashes as they are also known, were inspired by the spiky eyelashes seen on characters in anime and manga—the Japanese cartoons, comics, and animations. The eyes of anime characters have become such a popular style to imitate because those large, round eyes are a powerful tool for expressing emotions, and exaggerated features like the eyelashes add a visually striking and appealing look.
When you scatter long, individual lash spikes along the lash line, you can create a bold and eye-catching appearance, which you can vary depending on how much of a mixture of long, defined spikes and shorter, more feathery lashes you use to fill in gaps and add dimension as well. When these lash spikes are strategically placed, you can create a special, doll-like eye look, which makes the eyes look rounder, brighter and more expressive.
What Is a Lash Map?
A lash map is a visual guide to help you plan and execute the eyelash extensions so they will complement the client's eye shape and natural lashes, and give them the precise look they are after. If anime lashes aren't placed precisely, the overall appearance can appear unbalanced and random. A good lash map will help you to place the longest lashes in exactly the right place so you can apply the spikes where they will enhance the eyes the most, giving a balanced and harmonious look.
Always map out your lash design before you apply anime lashes so you know exactly where the spikes and fillers will best be placed, and if you use longer spikes in the centre and taper outwards, you can create a dramatic, eye-lifting anime lash look that your clients will love!
Know Your Common Eye Shapes
You can adjust your design depending on your client's eye shape, which will further help you to create a look that will enhance your client's eyes. The most common eye shapes are almond, round, hooded or down-turned. While almond-shaped eyes suit anime lashes very well and you can stick to standard mapping, round eyes are better if you focus on elongating the outer corners to prevent too much of a surprised look. When placing spikes on hooded eyes, make sure they are long enough to be seen above the lid, and down-turned eyes can be uplifted by placing spikes slightly higher.
Applying The Lashes
Always apply the long, spike lashes first. Spikes should be sharp, well-defined and evenly spaced, and by attaching them at different angles, you can create more texture and dimension. Make sure the spikes are spaced out evenly to maintain balance, and leave a small gap between spikes to give them that signature appearance.
Once you are happy with the spikes, it is time to add the fullness with wispy fans; this adds texture and keeps the lash line full, while enhancing the definition of the spikes. Remember, contrast is what makes the anime lashes stand out, so using 2D-4D lightweight fans gives a full, wispy look rather than using heavier fans, which can give a bulkier appearance.
Once you have finished, always step back and check the symmetry and between the lashes, and if necessary, brush and fluff gently with a spoolie, then allow your client to admire your work!
